Lights, Style, Action!

“The principal person in a picture is light”

– French painter Edouard Manet (1832-1883)

The lighting of a room is often one of the most overlooked aspects of home decor. Lamps are the perfect accessories to help add interest, texture, color and character to your home. But how do you use decorative lamps to supplement beauty, create focal points, and give the right balance of reflection, as well as shadow and light?

According to Hollywood set decorator Susan Benjamin, “when choosing the proper lamp you must bear in mind the size and theme of the room and choose a lamp to match these proportions and style. Once you have decided where to place the lamp, consider the shape that will work in the space. Ultimately, the most important consideration is the light intensity you need so choose your bulb and shade accordingly. Good design incorporates form and function.”

Home is a place we spend so many unforgettable moments with friends and family, so selecting the right lamps for your home is important. Every lighting fixture has some purpose, so the best technique to implement is often light layering – i.e. putting together different types of lights so your room is perfectly illuminated.

Place a floor lamp behind your reading chair to ensure you have enough light when you sit down to read a good book. Add a pair of buffet lamps to the sideboard in your dining room for extra lighting during meals. Light up a painting with a directional light, or play with lamps to transform the look and feel of a room. Placement of lamps should fulfill their purpose to create the intended ambiance and should be placed so they don’t hinder movement or function.

There are many types of light fixtures to choose from: chandeliers, pendant lights, table lamps, floor lamps, wall mounted sconces and directional lights. It is best to align the style of the fixture with the theme and style of the room. Also, remember to take into account the natural light sources to avoid overdoing the light.

Although decorative light fixtures enhance the visual appeal of a room, they can be used to affect our mood as well. Understanding the effect of light on our emotions is of great importance. Bright lights create alertness, vibrancy, and energy. Dim lights soothe and relax the mind, and even establish an ambiance of romance. Dull lights lull the mind into a state of inertia.
